Getting off route one we decided to visit a long time favorite diner of ours - the Broadway Diner in Red Bank, NJ. We asked the Samoan which way to the parkway. Giving us vague directions we were on our way. As soon as we passed our first toll both we realized that this was the last road in NJ that we wanted to be on. There are no diners on the parkway! So we turned off to route 35. The first diner we hit along the way was The Red Oak Diner. Admirably this was one of the first major undertakings to get sponsors for the site that we had gone on. It was at this diner that we learned out first business lesson. When diners are busy, trying to talk to the owner is a bit difficult. Especially when you don't sit down for coffee first. We were politely asked to come back on a Wednesday night when it wasn't as crowded. We dropped of the paperwork, grabbed a business card and left - sadly defeated.

Okay, we needed a new game plan. Next diner we hit we walk in cheerfully, sit at the less crowded counter, make small talk with the waitress, order two cups of coffee and ask politely to speak to a manager. We pull in to the Middletown Diner - I might be mistaken but this diner bears a striking resemblance to the diner where Silent Bob first speaks in Chasing Amy. We sit down at the counter, make small talk with the waitress, order two cups of coffee and ask politely to speak to a manager and SCORE! Well sort of... the two managers did talk with us and indeed seemed interested enough to check it out. But its not like they forked over money right then and there. BUT... WE GOT OUR COFFEE ON THE HOSUE! This was the first time any manager was kind enough to do that for us. We walked out of there like we had just won the superbowl.

Our goal was in site. Just a bit further down route 35 and we would be in Red Bank. We turn down the street and find ourselves at... the Broadway Diner? Whoops! We've been calling this place the Red Bank Diner for months. Well a rose by any other name is still a great diner. And order of wings (which Dave in particular was looking forward to all night) and a pot of coffee. One huge bonus about this diner is that they give you a full pot of coffee and leave it on the table. On the negative side they also leave a pot of syrup on the table. Maybe this isn't such a good thing.
